What is N'Ko Pad?
N'Ko Pad is Android's first text editor for N'Ko language. N'Ko alphabets are not supported in Android, so this app uses font images to display the text. It converts the N'Ko text to English format when saving to a file or sharing with other apps. When you open the saved file it converts the text from English format back to N'Ko text. Similarly when you share or copy/paste text in English format from other apps into N'Ko Pad it converts them back to N'Ko text.
You can use N'Ko Pad to send a message directly in N'Ko using the share tool to computers and other devices that support N'Ko fonts. You can also convert N'Ko text to English for SMS/Email and the recipient can use N'Ko Pad to convert the English message back to N'Ko on their end.
How does N'Ko Pad convert N'Ko text into English format?
N'Ko Pad uses the following table to convert text between N'Ko and English:
Can I read N'Ko Pad's text in computers?
Yes, messages shared in N'Ko via email can be read in N'Ko in computers that support N'Ko fonts without English conversion. However, you have to use English to send messages to other N'Ko Pad users who can then import English into their N'Ko Pad app.
What is the difference between N'Ko & English in Share tool?
N'Ko is for sharing with computers and devices that support N'Ko fonts. English is for sharing with other N'Ko Pad users who can import English into their N'Ko Pad app. N'Ko text when sharing is not readable in Android devices.
How do I edit N'Ko text? Are there any limitations?
Type N'Ko text using the green keyboard at the bottom of the screen. Android's keyboard cannot be used to enter N'Ko text. Since text is displayed using font images it has the following limitations:
- N'Ko text cannot be selected in the editor. Use share tool to copy the text to clipboard or share with other apps.
- Use the delete key to delete characters one by one because text selection is not available.
- Touch a N'Ko alphabet in the editor to place the cursor after it.
- Cursor can be placed only after a N'Ko alphabet and not in blank lines or at the beginning of a line.
- Since it uses images to display text the app may slow down after 200 characters. Save the text and start a new file if you experience any lag.
- Undo feature for edits is not available.
- Word wrap is not supported.
Why do I get invalid key messages?
If you type an invalid combination of tone marks and characters then you will get an invalid key message. Please check to make sure you're pressing the correct key.
After I place the cursor on a word and edit it, the word is no longer connected! What do I do?
To reconnect any disjoint words place the cursor on the first line of text. This will reconnect all the words again. Now you can place the cursor wherever you like and continue typing.
How do I share the text?
Use the share tool to share the text in English format. You can copy the entire text to clipboard, share it with other apps or view it in English format to select and copy parts of the text.
How do I read messages from other N'Ko Pad users?
From the SMS or email app select the English text and share it with the N'Ko Pad app. If there is no share feature then select and copy the text inside the messaging app and then paste it in the import tool inside the N'Ko Pad app. It's that simple! If there are any invalid characters in the message then the app will display an error during the import process.
Where do you save the file?
Files are by default saved in /NkoPad folder under the external storage directory. This could be in your internal memory or external sd card depending on your device. You can change the file path in the save dialog. It is recommended to save your work in small files for example under 300 characters.
How do I open a file?
You can only open and edit plain text files (usually ends with .txt). First make sure your device has a file manager software (like ES File Explorer app) installed. You can use the open button within the app to launch the file manager and open a text file. Or launch the file manager outside the app and open a text file. Select N'Ko Pad in the 'Open with' dialog to open the file in N'Ko Pad. This app is not designed to open large text files.
